Fall 2009 Mitigation Project

On September 25th and 26th of 2009, the Pikes Peak Wildfire Prevention Partners completed another wildland fuels mitigation project.  A three mile section of the Santa Fe Trail located between Monument and Palmer Lake is the location of the project.

The goal of the project is to enhance the effectivness of the trial as a fuel break between the heavily used railroad line that is adjacent to and downslope from the trail and a residential area that is adjacent to and upslope from the tail.  The project focused on removal of ladder fuels and dead vegetaion within the right of way of the trail.

Project participants included:
Anderson Tree & Stump Removal
Forest Keepers
Forestree Development, LLC
Seedmasters, Inc.
Colorado State Forest Service
Colorado Springs Fire
Colorado Springs Fire Explorer Post
Black Forest Fire Rescue
Douglas County Building Division - Wildfire Mitigation
El Paso County Wildland Fire Crew
Larkspur Fire Protection District
USDA Forest Service

This project was the initiated by Chris Barth, former president of the Pikes Peak Wildfire Prevention Partners, and is a high visability project on public lands.  Chris has moved to the west slope of Colorado where he is continuing his work in wildland fire prevention.
